On 18th June 2018, Sheffield Crown Court fined Balfour Beatty £500,000 after exposing workers to vibration between 2002 and 2011.
The prosecution was brought by the Health & Safety Executive. HSE was concerned that workers at the company were at risk of developing Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome, previously known as vibration white finger. The HSE investigation concluded that the company failed in its duty to ensure that risks to workers were as low as reasonably practicable and that the company failed to have a suitable system of health surveillance.
The company pleaded guilty to breaches of section 2(1)the Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. A fine was order of £500,000 with costs of £195,000.
